Vail stood in the resortâs lobby yawning repeatedly before shaking her head and hoping it would somehow wake her up. She caught a guy ogling her, so she pulled back her thin leather jacket and deliberately exposed her holstered Glock and brass FBI badge.
The man looked away faster than a Rottweiler can snatch a hunk of steak.
A moment later, her phone rang.
âGood morning, Adam.â
âNot really.â
âWhy?â she asked. âNot enough sleep?â
âNot enough sleep. And.â
Vail waited a beat, but Russell did not finish the thought. âAnd what?â
âAnd weâve got a list, remember?â
âLast night the list was good news.â
âOnly by comparison toââ
âYeah, yeah, yeah. Whatever. But I thought Ferraro said we couldnât go that route.â
âHe said we couldnât devote manpower to go door to door. Didnât say we couldnât do it.â
âWhen are you picking me up?â
âIâm parked out front.â
âYou couldâve said so.â
âI just did. Get your ass out here.â
Vail strode into the sunlight and saw Russellâs car parked near the valet stand. She descended the steps and climbed into his sedan.
A moment later, they were pulling out of the resort.
âSo when we visit these women, I donât think I should introduce myself as FBI. Might freak them out.â
âYou mean freaking them out more than the police coming to their doors and telling them not to wash or shower ⦠until further notice?â
Vail shrugged. âYeah.â
âWeâre not seriously going to tell them that, right?â
âNo, Adam. Weâre not. Youâre going to introduce yourself as HPD Detective Adam Russell and then say, âThis is my partner Karen Vail.ââ
âThanks. I couldnât have figured that part out.â
âThe key is not saying FBI.â
âDo you think I took a stupid pill this morning? Move on.â
âRight. So we tell her that weâve gotten an anonymous tip and she should not buy any homemade soap.â
âAnd you donât think theyâre gonna wonder about us?â
âHow so?â
âLike maybe weâre impostersâor cops whoâve lost touch with reality?â
âSell it. You want me to give you a script?â
Russell frowned at her. âNo thank you.â
Vail tried to hold back her smile but failed.
âSo which Mary do we visit first?â
âMight as well save time. Go by proximity. Which is closest?â
Russell pulled to the curb and looked over the list he had printed out. âThis one. Mary Pollard.â
A mile later, they parked in Pollardâs driveway. Russell took the lead and knocked on her front door, which featured a wreath made of wine corks and silk flowers.
âPretty,â he said.
âIf you like that kind of thing.â
They waited, then rapped on the wood again.
âNow what? Leave a note?â
âNo,â Vail said, pulling the list from her back pocket. âWeâve got phone numbers. Letâs call. Maybe she doesnât hear us.â
âAre those cells or landlines?â
âYouâre asking me? Itâs your list.â
âDonât know.â
He dialed and they waited. They did not hear the phone ring inside the house, but Mary Pollard answered. Russell explained who he was and went through the spiel they had agreed on. After hanging up, he turned and headed back to the car.
âWell?â
âGood news is sheâs still alive. And she hasnât bought any soap.â
âHowâd she take it?â
âThere was some pausing.
